Nice setup. I noticed your camera is 1/2" size CCD and the lens is 1/3" size.

I'm not sure what those measurements mean lol. The picture seems clear with no vignetting, so the CCD sensor must be entirely covered by the lens FOV.

Are other systems normally matched in this measurement?

Well if there is no vignetting, then it's fine. If you can get hold of a 1/2 lens, you could try some tests to see if images are better in low light compared to using a 1/3 lens.

Yes, one day I will get a few more camera's and lenses to play with and I can try what works best. Due to time and geographic constraints, I had to buy an off the shelf system, at which time I could only find the Fireball camera. It seems to work fairly well so far, so I just used it as is, it even survived a golf ball sized hail attack (see my blog)! I know it isn't the best combination of camera and lens, but it has got me started Smile

I have been putting in more effort to automate the system, and lately data reduction. Hopefully SonotaCo or someone can help me with my previous post regarding reducing false positives. I will post the actual false detection counts when I have finished the preliminary analysis.

Each false detection results in wasted space and time to FTP the data to my server. The more false detections, the more I need to manually check the data etc. which hampers my effort to automate everything.

Of course, once I get everything running smoothly I will be looking to add more cameras etc, at which point I will be looking a bit closer at the hardware requirements.

Hi Daniel,

We are also very interested in doing video astronomy using Astrovid
FireballCam (mainly Sprites) in Florida, US. However, I'm having trouble
contacting the Astrovid company.

The company web site, www.astrovid.com is gone. I sent e-mails (two
e-mail address posted on this forum) to them. But no reply. Every time
when I make a phone call, it is automatic voice message. So, I'm wondering
whether Astrovid is in a big trouble (e.g. out of business).

Do you know anything about the status of Astrovid?
If Astrovid can't provide FireballCam anymore, do you know any other
company (hopefully in US) which can provide such a nice weather-proof
wide-field optical camera?

Thanks,
Taka

Hi Taka,

I have noticed that their web site is down as well. For a while they had a "under construction" message, but now it has reverted to a directory listing. Either they are very unprofessional or as you suspect, they may be in trouble in some way.

I hope they re-appear because they had a lot of other innovative astronomy products that often made it into astronomy magazines. Perhaps they should consider using distributors as I found them slow to deal with as well.

I had seen this camera in my original searches and it looks very nicely built. However I was under the impression that an all sky camera would detect less meteors than a smaller FOV camera.

I am not familiar with the SBIG specs, is anyone on the forum using it and can provide some feedback?

Hi Daniel,

I contacted SBIG about AllSky340. It is possible to change the lens.
However, the lens has to be C-mount (FUJINON YV2.7x2.9LR4D-SA2
lens is CS-mount). He also suggested that for detecting sprites, AllSky340
is not suitable since sprites are fast transients. He also thinks that
AllSky340 doesn't work with UFOCapture. So, I concluded that AllSky340 is
not suitable for my purpose.

When I surfed the Watec web site, I found that they provide not only
a camera but also a nice housing for the camera which looks very similar
to Astrovid FireballCAM:

http://genwac.com/products.php?subcat_id=41

I will contact Watec to see whether they can provide the camera which I want.

Regards,
Taka

I cannot contact Astrovid too.
Nethertheless, the Fireballcam proposed by Astrovid can be made on other way. My first camera is same has Fireballcam expected the little dom in front of the package.

You can find the description of all sky camera in my website (in french):
http://www.jouin.eu/may_sur_orne/detection_de_bolide/station_may_sur_orne.htm

So, the allsky camera (MSO_J1b) is composed of:

Camera:WATEC WAT-902H2 ULTIMATE CCIR
Lens: FUJINON YV2.7x2.9LR4D-SA2L
Transformater: WATEC WAT-AD901
Box: WATEC APAQ2000
to fixe box (optional) WATEC W9210

All has been bought in USA

Hi Stephane,

Thanks a lot for your information.

I did contact Watec sales person, and he informed me one of the company
(pro-tech; www.protechsales.com) selling the Watec products. They said
that they will assemble the lens and camera to the APAQ housing. The total
cost is well less than $1K (there is an extra discount in my case, since I mentioned
that we will purchase six cameras in total). We have a good solution for
having a reasonable camera.

Anyway, I have a question. The pro-tech person recommended WAT-902H3
Ultimate camera since FUJINON YV2.7x2.9LR4D-SA2L lens matches best
in 1/3" CCD camera. Do you have any specific reason why you use
WAT-902H2 instead of WAT-902H3?

Regards,
Taka

A part of the answer has been given by Sonotaco in this post:
http://sonotaco.jp/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1839&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=.

My USA contact person about Watec and others products is charles@royalsystems.com
I have never issues with him until now.
