Hello every body!
I search a Video(PAL)/USB converter because I wouldn't like to use an internal PCI card capture.
For the using of WATEC 902H2 Ultimate and UFOcapture V2 software, what kind of converter do you use?
Thanks.
Best regards.

Hi

I am recommending Canopus ADVC55 IEEE1394(DV).
It is a bit expensive and IEEE1394 requires a bit higher performance of CPU,
but it runs stably with Microsoft's standard device driver. It is almost trouble free. |

Hi,
Thanks for you answer. Nethertheless, the Canopus ADVC55 IEEE1394(DV) requires a Firewire plug on PC and the CPU using can be an issue for me: I would like to make a "standalone" station with low cost PC (bases on a eeeBOX or on a eeeTOP of ASUS). Like the low cost PC has a wifi link, I would like to take it the control at the distance via a VNC software. In this way, I only need a 220AC power supply for the standalone station.
What do you think about GrabBeeX light?
Regards.

Oh....
UFOCapture requires high performance CPU such as
Pentium4 > 2.5GHz, or Core2Duo > 1.7G.
I am afraid atom processors may be insufficient.
Therefore I strongly recommend to use normal desktop PCs using Core2 or Pentinum4
with fast inner HDD.
I don't know the detail of GrabBeeX, but from its catalog, it uses EM2820 chip.
EM2820 has compression functions witch may not be compatible with UFOCapture.
(UFOCapture needs un-compressed video stream as its input for motion detection)
I am not sure but I think it is risky to select GrabBeeX. |

Do you know other grabber for PAL/USB conversion compatible with UFOCapture?

Hum... it's seem that there is only Canopus ADVC55 which is work with UFO Capture!
And about internal card for PC, what are the reference of the cards working with UFO Capture?
Thanks and kind regards

Well, I think there may exist some products, but it may be difficult to recommend.
I have tested more than 30 capture devices, there were many good USB2.0 devices.
But the life time of low price products are very short and almost all of them are not available now.
And capture products which contains TV-tuner are different depending on the country.
Therefore it is very difficult to recommend internationally.
also, in Japan, we are in the changing period to HDTV now , therefore analog products become very few. |

You can get a Dazzle* from FNAC for 50 euros, made by Pinnaclesys. That's what I use and it works quite well. The PCTV series would also work fine.
That said, I did notice a degradation of UFOCapture performance on Vista compared to XP on a laptop. An XP machine of at least 2 GHz single core or any dual core and a fast hard drive will work well. Laptops have slow HD speeds (mine 4200 RPM), it works for me, but it may be safer to take a 7200 RPM.

Hi Sonotaco-San:
I am using GrabBeeX for quite some time already and my latest run of Orionids was with a 3,8mm lens recently www.nightevents.blogspot.com. Seems ok to me...

Dear all,
I received the Canopus ADVC-55 and it works fine. In order to made a stand alone station (solar power, ...) I would like to use an netbook and USB aquisition board.
Have you tested UFO capture with an eeePC (atom 270)? If yes, what is the CPU level used? (I know that SonotaCo doesn't recommanded this but if a person has been tested this configuration, I'm very interested).
What do you think about Dazzle DVD Recorder aquisition board?
Thanks and kind regards.

There is one person who tried atom with ufocapture. He did not succeed.
I am runnig UFOCapture on a note PC with Pentium-M 2.0GHz.
It can handle 640x480 with usb2.0 capture ewuipment, but it does not work with 720x480 IEEE1394. Therefore I recommend Core or Core2 or Core2Duo 2GHz or higher.
There is another restriction in note PC. That is HDD writing speed.
Because the data flow of uncompressed video stream is tremendously large, 5400rpm HDD is almost minimum. Do not choose 4200rpm one. |

It seems that a site use a Centrino at 1.8GHz and UFOCapture works fine. The PC used is a CarPC but it's very expensive. http://ams.coldevence.fr/ams/index.php?page=technical.php. The Atom is the next generation of Centrino I think.
About the internal HDD, we can be replace it by a 7200rpm.
In fact I would like to find a PC which is power supply by 12V battery.
And about the Dazzle card, what do you think? |
