Hello,
I've asked about this problem in the past but corrected it with new hardware.
But it's started happening again.

when ufocapture records an event to an avi sometimes it seems to hang while writing the avi file. Please let me explain.

motion is detected, the system starts to write the avi and it seems to hang up on the 4-5 frame and then it just seems to continue writing the last frame over and over. Normally a detected event's avi is about 113 frames long but when it hangs it creates an avi that is 3500 frames or more that wont play past the 4-5th frame.

I've uploaded an example of a good avi and a bad avi that were recorded during the same nightly session.

Working AVI

Non working avi
http://www.dragonneo.net/examples/M20100715_072132_Hawley_Tex_wa.avi

I've tried new computer equipment, hard drives, memory and enything else but this still happens after I've had the system running for a few months.

Any ideas what might be causing it?

thank you for any help,
Kevin Palivec

Hi Kevin

I saw your avi files. This is typical so called under-run problem.
It happens when a DirectShow process pipeline could not catch up the speed of input video stream.
There are many possibilities that cause this problem.
1) HDD was not ready to write at that time.
1-1) HDD power was OFF by automatic power saving settings of Windows.
1-2) HDD was in the head position self correction time(some model of HDD does this almost once in an hour and it occupies HDD for almost 1 sec. While some HDD guarantees the continuous writing speed(multimedia model), so use those HDDs).
1-3) HDD was used by other program or tasks.
1-3-1) Unti virus scan
1-3-2) Index making by Windows
1-3-3) Shadow copy by Windows (Vista, 7)
What is your OS? if it is Windows Vista or 7, there are some special cautions to avoid this.
1-3-4) Network access or other tasks ......
1-3-5) HDD has broken sectors and reqires additional seek time.

2) CPU was too busy
How much is the cpu load while recording of UFOCapture?
Check this by task manager. It should be 95%/#core
(#core is 1 for single thread CPU, 2 for one core HT CPU or Dual core not HT,,,8 for 4 core HT CPU)

.....

I am not sure but 1-3) is most probable.

Hello,
thanks for the quick reply.

Here's some information about the pc.

UFOCapture is all that runs on this machine.
I dont have a virus scanner installed on it because it only does ufocapture.
An additional note. The video capture card is an old Hauppauge Win TV pci card.
Would it be better to use firewire based video? I have a pinnacle moviebox I can use if you think that would be better.

Hi
Thank you for detail info. It helps me.

It may worth to check your target drive E: is not using indexing (on the indexing option in Control Panel).

Firewire devices use Microsoft's builtin device driver, so the troubles are comparatively rare. But I experienced the under run using firewire also when HDD was slow.
So, it may worth to try if it is the last possibility.

Your PC may be good enough, what is the CPU load (%) while deteting?
